Serco are exceptionally privileged and proud of our involvement in the world of science and research. From the direct employment of scientists, to the provision of customised and flexible services to support research endeavours and operational infrastructure.
Serco undertake the management and operations of national assets delivering government-contracted work of critical importance to the UK economy and the quality of our lives. As well as NPL, Serco currently manage the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) - in a consortium - and the Joint Services Command and Staff College. NPL is also part of the Department of Trade and Industry's Science Ambassador's Scheme and runs outreach activities with local schools and colleges and provides speakers at universities. With the Institute of Physics, the organisation also works closely with physics teachers at schools in the London area to help them bring physics to life by providing them with first-hand experience of working physicists.
As an organisation we understand the need to work in true partnership with a large number of partners, suppliers and other organisations in our research and scientific based businesses. Within the Space Sector, Serco manage a large number of subcontractors under a consolidated framework contract to deliver support to Earth Observation activities, including anomaly detection in data streams. These activities involve partners from the private sector, academic and national Government organisations across Europe.
We are partnered with Manchester University and Battelle to manage the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) the leading nuclear technology services provider in the UK. NNL has expertise across the full range of nuclear technology, including waste management, nuclear security and non-proliferation, materials and corrosion and plant inspection.
Outside of our direct involvement in scientific activities, Serco, as a Technology organisation, also provide critical support services to organisations including the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) where we currently provides IT Services, Industrial Support and Cryogenic Operations Support, the European Space Agency, providing IT infrastructure services as well as support to specific scientific programmes such as the Global monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES).
